As one of the new frontiers of cognitive behavioral therapy, imagery holds rich promise for the treatment of clients. The purpose of this study was to provide a review on the various imagery interventions for the cognitive behavioral therapists. The history of imagery techniques and the reasons why imagery is important were briefly reviewed in the context of cognitive behavioral therapy. Before providing a general summary of imagery interventions, a detailed process of preparation for imagery intervention and imagery assessment was presented and illustrated with case examples. Then we presented a systematic review of the imagery interventions that were used in cognitive behavioral therapy. First, interventions that dealt with negative and disturbing imagery were introduced. Secondly, we provided interventions that could improve coping and problem-solving, and create a new way of existence. Because of limited space, the current review did not include schema therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, meta-cognitive therapy, and eye-movement desensitizaton and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) which have a strong imagery component. It was suggested that imagery could potentially enhance conventional cognitive behavioral therapy.
